History/Origin | Named after Thomas Wells, Supreme Court Judge of the Northern Territory. Thomas Wells was appointed as a full-time Judge of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory in 1933 following the retirement of Mallam. He presided over some of the Territory's most high profile trials, including the prosecution of Tuckiar. He was evacuated from Darwin to Alice Springs following the air raids during the Second World War. He returned to Darwin following the war, suffered a stroke in 1951, and retired shortly thereafter. He remained in Darwin and died in the Darwin Hospital in September 1954. |
