History/Origin |
Named after Captain Samuel Sweet and his wife Mary Elizabeth Sweet. As Captain of the "Gulnare" accompanied by the barque "Bengal", he carried officials and settlers to old Palmerston among whom were Captain Douglas and his family. Mrs. Sweet and her child were aboard and the two ships reached old Palmerston on 24th June, 1870 and these women were among the first to set foot in the Darwin of today. Captain Sweet registered some of the first marriages in Darwin. |
