History/Origin |
Named after Harold George NELSON who was born in Sydney in 1883. He came to Darwin in 1913 and worked as a diamond driller in the Pine Creek area. He rose to public prominence in 1918 when, as Trade Union Secretary, he and others were instrumental in the downfall of the Gilruth Administration. He was the first Member for the NT in Federal politics in 1922. He was also a water boring contractor and butcher in Central Australia until 1946 when ill health forced his retirement. He died in Alice Springs in 1947. |
