History/Origin |
Named in commemoration of Gerald (Gerry) Thomas Monck (1922 - 1998) Civil Engineering Contractor and Businessman. Born at Marylands, WA to Marion (nee Scanlon) and Louis Monck. Gerry was raised with his brothers and sisters at the Hines Hotel which his parents managed. In 1937 at the age of 15 he left home and found work here and there arriving in Darwin in March 1942. His first job was at the Fort Hill oil storage tunnels and 3 years later he purchased an old ex-army truck and started his soil supply and mineral excavation business which he continue to run until his death on 26 September 1998. |
