History/Origin Mel Road is named in commemoration of Melvyn (Mel or Hutchie) Patrick Hutchinson (1928-1997), born in Brisbane he completed a motor mechanic apprenticeship and moved to Darwin in 1951. In the late 1950s he was instrumental in the development and promotion of motorcross and speedway racing in the Top End, first at the Darwin Showgrounds, then at Bagot Park and finally at Hidden Valley. He was a life member of the Darwin Speedway Riders and Drivers Association.
