Named after Robert Bruce (Bob) Buck who was born in South Australia in 1881 and came to Central Australia around 1900 to work for his uncle who held Henbury Station. He initially worked with donkey teams carting stores in the area and later took up a pastoral lease with Charles Butler in the 1920's near Middleton Ponds. In 1953 he purchased a Lease in Alice Springs and lived there until his death in 1960. Buck was well known in the Alice Springs area as a bushman and guide to various expeditions exploring remote Central Australia. He achieved nationwide fame in 1931 when he discovered and buried the remains of Lasseter along with his diary and letters west of Ayers Rock in the Petermann Ranges.
