History/Origin |
Named after Sir William C Angliss, born in Dudley, England in 1865 and migrated to Australia in 1884. Settling in Melbourne he opened a butcher's shop which was the first of a chain of shops and by 1934 his company W Angliss & Coy was Australia's leading meat exporter. Sir William Angliss held a seat in the Victorian Legislative Council from 1912 to 1952, was knighted in 1939 and died in 1957. On his death he left $2 million to various charitable organisations in Victoria and Queensland. |
