History/Origin | Originally established as a Mission by the Catholic Church on Bathurst Island at the southern entrance to Apsley Strait. During the World War II defence of Darwin the Mission had the code name ARSY. In the 1980s the name of this Community changed to Nguiu. In 2010, the Community name was altered from Nguiu to Wurrumiyanga, as requested by the Tiwi Land Council, on advice from Traditional Land Owners. Wurrumiyanga is the local Tiwi name for the area where the community is built, meaning "the place where the cycads grow". |
