History/Origin | Named after the Urogymnus acanthobothrium, or Mumburarr whipray, a large stingray first discovered in 1999 in the Arafura Sea and later identified in tidal waters in the Top End, Kimberley and Gulf of Papua (Papua New Guinea). The Mumburarr whipray is one of the largest known stingrays at about 1.6 metres in width and is found in both brackish and marine waters. Mumburarr is the Limilngan language word for stingray. |
