History/Origin Pronounced "Garr-ah-mill-ah", Garramilla is the Larrakia name for "white stone", which is in reference to the white rock found in the Darwin area. Garramilla Boulevard was constructed in 2018/19 and is a major route into the Darwin CBD. During construction the project name for the road was 'Barneson Boulevard', as it was effectively an extension of the then existing 'Barneson Street', but this name was never officially registered. Toward the end of construction a request was made to give the road a name in the Larrakia language. In recognition of the dearth of Larrakia place names or words in the CBD and in honour of the 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages, the Place Names Committee recommended, and the Minister approved the official registration of the name 'Garramilla Boulevard'. The commemorative name 'Barneson' was placed on a reserve list for future use.
