History/Origin | Leonard Matthew Castillon (1920-1992) Leonard (Leo) Castillon was born at the old Darwin Hospital at Larrakeyah on 8 July 1920. He grew up in Darwin where he provided a great deal of input into the community, volunteering in many ways. He began playing football with the Wallabies Football Club in 1935-36 following the temporary breakaway of Waratahs and the Garrison Clubs from the NTFL to the then Darwin Football League. In 1936-37, Leo won the President's Medal for Best and Fairest becoming the youngest NTFL player, at the age of 17, to win the prestigious award and again in 1946-47. Between July 1941 to October 1941 Leo served with the Australian Army, Citizens Military Forces (Part-time Duty) and received a Certificate of Service including the War Medal for Service 1939 - 1945 and General Service Badge. In 1946 Leo met and married his wife, Cecilia Castillon (nee Roe) in Darwin and together they raised 5 children. One of his first jobs was as a municipal worker where he remained in that occupation for 12 years. Leo worked on the Pine Creek railway line during the war bringing in stores for the Army, and later worked as a Railway Fireman from 1946 to 1948. He has placed on the Wartime NT Railway Recognition Roll. He later took up a position on the waterfront where he was to spend the rest of his working life at the Port of Darwin. In 1954, Leo became a life member of the Waterside Workers Federation. In 1960 the Northern Territory Football League (NTFL) bestowed a Life Membership in recognition of 25 years contribution to Australian Rules Football and inducted him into the AFLNT Hall of Fame in 2012. Leonard passed away on 30 October 1992 at the age of 72. The achievements of his sporting and playing career before and after WWII have been published in a book researched by local historian Matthew Stephens; Colour Bar: Remembering and Forgetting Northern Territory Football, 1916-1955. |
