Ennio Bonanni was born in the Italian Alps in 1927 and immigrated to Australia from Italy's Carnic Alps in 1952. He moved to Darwin in 1953 and worked as a carpenter. In 1955 Ennio's brothers Bruno and Carlo, moved to Darwin. In 1957 the brothers moved to Alice Springs and set up their own building company, Bonanni Bros. In 1961 the youngest brother Aldo joined them in Alice Springs. The first jobs included the construction of the Youth Centre on Wills Tearrace and residential housing. In the 1960s Bonanni Brothers were making their own bricks, with brickyards in Katherine and Tennant Creek. In 1963, Ennio married Teresa in his hometown in Italy. They made their home on the Eastside of Alice Springs where they raised their four children. Ennio Bonanni was involved with the NT construction industry for almost 50 years and worked in the building and masonry brick and block business with his brothers and son until his death in 2003 and is buried in Alice Springs. |
