History/Origin |
Gerard (Gerry) Kuyer (1927-2011) was born in Amsterdam and came to Australia in 1951. His first job was in Victoria where he ended up moving around the state doing various jobs. He met his wife, Elaine and they had two daughters, Pauline and Jean. Between 1954 and 1964 he was working as a carpenter on the Latrobe Valley Water and Sewerage Board. In 1965, he won a position with the Alice Springs Department of Works as a civil works supervisor. He was provided with a house two months later and his family joined him. His primary job was constructing subdivisions, bridges and road works. His legacy are the bridges built over the Finke, Palmer and Todd Rivers and Colyer and Charles Creek; the water supply from the Mereenie pumping station to the town tanks; the Airport infrastructure; the power station and three cattle yards in the Alice Springs area. In 1974, Mr Kuyer retired and moved to the Sunshine Coast and then Bundaberg where he died. |
