History/Origin |
Named after Mary Alice Ward, a teacher and pastoralist who joined the gold-rush at Tennant Creek in 1935 and who, with her husband, after striking gold purchased and developed Banka Banka cattle station, north of Tennant Creek. Known as 'the missus of Banka Banka', Mary also owned a butcher shop at Tennant Creek, supplying it from the abattoir at the cattle station. |
