History/Origin |
Named after Dick Scobie who started out as a drover working mobs from the Kimberley and Arnhem Land to South Australia and western Queensland. He purchased and ran Hidden Valley Station from 1945 to 1983. He gradually built up the station to 4087 square kilometres. This was achieved despite becoming a paraplegic in a car accident in 1968. After the accident, his wife would assist Dick with strapping his wheelchair to the back of a flat top Toyota while she drove him around to check fences and cattle. Selling his station due to drought in 1983, Dick and his wife first relocated to Alice Springs; however, Dick soon purchased a 280 acre block in Charters Towers in Queensland. He remained there until his death in 2003. Dick passed away just two days before the launch of the book Angels Don't Go Droving - The Dick Scobie Story by Jim Ditchfield. |
