Named after Bessie Laniyuk who was born at Berry Springs (Laniyuk in Kungarakany) in about 1930. Her father was Mickey Nunganjul and mother, Minnie Derritj (Malak Malak). She was adopted by the Kungarakany and gave evidence in the Finniss River Land Claim, although not a claimant. Bessie married twice to Neddie Tambling and Earnest Goodman, and had a number of children which included a daughter Ada and also Tom, the offspring of Bessie and Neddie. With Earnest, she had a number of children including Harold, Philip (Balung), Dora and others. She lived at the Fifteen Mile Community (Palmerston Indigenous Village). Bessie died in the late 1990s. |
