History/Origin |
Named after Nugget Majar who was born at Daly River in about the mid-1920s, where his father, a Madgnelle (Werat) man, was the police tracker. He spent the pre-war decades in the Reynolds River wetlands area living a traditional life with his grandparents in the paperbark smokes houses. As a young man he worked on Tipperary Station and later at Batchelor. During World War II he worked for the Army at Burrell Creek and Adelaide River, on the railway and packing hand grenades in grease to go to commandos serving in Timor and the islands to the north. He married Billiawuk, a Marananggu woman. Nugget died at Darwin Hospital in 1989. |
