History/Origin | Named after Ian Tranthem, who worked variously in his early life as an artist and fishermen. He came to Darwin and commenced study towards a law degree at the Northern Territory University in 1990. He graduated in 1994, and was the first articled clerk accepted by the Darwin office of the Australian Government Solicitor. He was admitted as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory in 1996, and commenced practice with the firm Noonans. He was involved in a number of high-profile cases involving Aboriginal land rights, and in the Northern Territory Power Generation litigation. He joined the Darwin Community Legal Service (DCLS) in 2002, initially as a Project Solicitor, and then as Principal Solicitor. He relished the work of the service, in particular anti-discrimination and welfare rights law. He remained there until his death in May 2010. Ian played a major role in the National Welfare Rights Network and was highly respected among welfare rights lawyers across Australia. |
