History/Origin | Named after James (Jim) Gallacher who was born in Warrnambool, Victoria, in 1923. He served in the Australian Imperial Force in WWII from 1942 to 1946. After discharging, Jim studied to become a teacher and in 1951 was appointed the first school teacher at Areyonga Aboriginal Community. Jim later moved from teaching to administrator roles. His first appointment was District Education Officer with the Welfare Branch, which he held from 1956 to 1959. Jim relocated his family to Darwin in 1962, where he became the Inspector of Schools. During this time he gained an intimate knowledge of the educational problems confronting Aboriginal Communities. Jim's contribution to education was officially recognised when he became the first Fellow of the Northern Territory Chapter of the Australian College of Education in 1976 and was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1978. Jim passed away suddenly from a heart attack in 1990, at age 66. |
