Named after Reg Harris AM who was born in 1924 in Adelaide and grew up in Lyrup, South Australia. He moved to Alice Springs in May 1947 to work as an electrician. In 1948 he started his own company, which coincided with the introduction of evaporative air-conditioners in the township. He and his wife were involved in many community activities, including Aussie Rules, netball and hockey. He represented Alice Springs on several Government and private boards and was involved in the tourism industry. Reg was elected chairman of the Alice Springs Cyclone Tracy Appeal Committee, when Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin. Reg was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his services to sport, the town and tourism, and was a recipient of the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal. |
