History/Origin | Named after Barry John Willing who was born in March 1939 in Sydney. He started work at the Sydney Water Board at age 14. In 1957 he undertook a drafting course at Sydney Technical College and finished first in the state. Completing his High School Certificate in 1959, he then went on to study in his own time for another 7 years to gain a Civil Engineering degree from the Sydney University. Barry relocated to Darwin in December 1966, one month after graduating from Sydney University. He managed the Darwin office of Willing & Partners Pty Ltd from 1974 and at the time of his death was the Chairman of directors of the company. The company had several interstate and overseas branches in this time. During his time at Willing & Partners, the company was responsible for a major amount of engineering design work around the Darwin region. These included design works for the following suburbs: Alawa, Jingili, Moil, Wagaman, Wanguri, Tiwi, Nakara, Anula, Wulagi, Malak, Leanyer, Karama and suburbs of Palmerston. Civil and structural design works including Tindal Air Base and power stations for Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and Katherine. Some other works included St Paul's Church, grandstands at Gardens Oval, Darwin Community College, Casuarina Shopping Centre, Stage 2 of the Tiger-Brennan arterial road and the Olgas - Yulara road. They were responsible for the design and development of the Darwin Cricket Oval and the hockey complex at the Marrara sporting complex. Barry belonged to many committees, including the Institute of Engineers of Australia, the Association of Consulting Engineers (NT) and the Northern Territory Planning Authority. He was the Chairman of the Planning Committee from 1986 until his passing. He also had sporting interests outside of work and in the earlier years was President of the Casuarina Cricket Club. He was then both Vice-Captain and Captain of the Darwin Golf Club. Barry passed away in October 1989. |
