History/Origin | Named after Ida Ashburner who was born at Childers in Queensland in 1901. She trained in general nursing at the Brisbane General Hospital before coming to Darwin in 1928 on the Malabar. She was a board member of the Nurses' Registration Board when legislation was passed that same year. Ida then became the matron of the Darwin hospital in early 1929. Ida was in Darwin when it was bombed by the Japanese in 1942. Her husband owned his own aircraft and flew for the Aerial Medical Service. His aircraft was destroyed in the Japanese attack. Ida was evacuated from Darwin by train and truck and worked in a private nursing home in Melbourne during the war. She returned to Darwin after hostilities ceased and later passed away in October 1966. |
