History/Origin |
Named after Ruth Rayney who worked as a nurse for the Australian Inland Mission (AIM) and went to Maranboy in the Northern Territory. She married Constable Ted Heathcock at Mataranka in November 1931. They were posted to Roper Bar, where Ruth nursed Aboriginals who were afflicted by leprosy. In 1951, she was awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her courage and initiative. Ruth passed away in May 1995. |
