History/Origin | Named after Neville John Walker AM (1936 - 2005), a prominent Northern Territory businessman. Born in Perth, Neville commenced his long involvement with earthmoving equipment and over the years gained more than 45 years experience in civil engineering, mining, subdivisional development and management. In 1962, Neville co-founded Henry & Walker Pty Ltd, a Darwin based company, with Frazer Henry. Their landmark civil construction projects included the Stuart and Great Western Highway upgrades, Broome to Halls Creek section of Highway One, Ranger Uranium and Arnhem Highway, East Arm Port development Stages 1 and 2 in Darwin and Groote Eylandt development and maintenance from 1974. In 1987, they won their first mining contract, which was to become the company's largest business activity. In 1995, Neville was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his contribution to the economic development of the Northern Territory, and a few years later was awarded the Australian Construction Association's Service to Construction Award. He was also a member of the Commonwealth Governments Special Working Group on Australian Indonesian Development Area and was co-Chairman of the Northern Territory Economic Summit in 2001. |
