| History/Origin | Named in commemoration of James (Jim) William (1912 - 1995) and Eileen Margaret (nee Mooney) (1919 - 1992) Gayton. Jim came to Darwin in 1942 to work for the Public Works Department. Jim's first job was building the East Point fortifications. He was a member of the burial party which buried those killed during the air raid in a mass grave at Kahlin Oval. He was also involved in constructing bush camps for the military, finding suitable timber and supervising sawmills operations. Jim married Eileen Mooney, who had served in the Australian Women's Army Service at Adelaide River, Berrimah and Larrakeyah for 4 years, attaining the rank of Captain in the 111 Signals Unit. Eileen joined the NT Administration in 1962, retiring in 1981, having worked in Aboriginal welfare and education during that time. In retirement Eileen was involved in many community groups, including the Anti-Cancer Foundation, the Nightcliff Evergreens and NT Council of Ex-Servicewomen. Jim was also involved in the community as a member of the Nightcliff Progress Association. He was a Darwin City Council Alderman, from 1973 to 1975, not standing for re-election due to ill health. |
