History/Origin | Named in commemoration of Roy Spencer Barden (1916 - 2000) who was a WWII veteran who served with the 8 Field Ambulance. A pharmacist and businessman, Roy arrived in the Territory around 1954. He and a friend drove up from Sydney in a small car, pulling a trailer loaded with timber to build a new pharmacy. He later leased premises in Smith Street. When many of the buildings in Smith Street blew away during Cyclone Tracy, the pharmacy survived. Roy married Doris, a nursing sister who arrived in Darwin in 1958 and they had three children. In the early days Roy supplemented the old Darwin Hospital pharmacy, which locals claimed was understocked. He regularly changed dressings, cleaned infected areas, checked stitches and did other small medical jobs. In 1980 Roy stood as an Independent for the seat of Nightcliff in the NT general election but was unsuccessful. |
