History/Origin | Named after Father Maurice McPhillamy who was born in NSW in October 1919. He grew up in Wangaratta and Seymour in Victoria and during this time excelled in tennis and Australian Rules football. In 1946, Father McPhillamy was ordained and began his career as a priest by teaching in many colleges run by his congregation. He taught at St John's College in Darwin in the 1960s and 1970s. He also trained players for St Mary's Football Club. Father McPhillamy spent his last 12 years as minister at St Mary's Church. He passed away in May 1978, aged 59. |
