History/Origin | Named after Pastor Friedrich Wilhelm Albrecht, MBE, who was born in Poland in 1894 and studied to become a Pastor at Hermannsburg in Germany, where he graduated in 1924. He arrived at Hermannsburg Mission in central Australia in 1926, working there for 26 years before coming to Alice Springs to work with Aborigines in the town and on the surrounding pastoral properties. During his time at Hermannsburg Mission he developed the Kaparilja Water Scheme, a tannery and assisted in the establishment of Haast Bluff. At all times he tried to provide Aborigines with an economic base and was interested in establishing them as independent pastoralists west of Hermannsburg Mission. He returned to Adelaide in 1963 and died there in 1984. |
