History/Origin | After HMAS Balikpapan, a LCH (Landing Craft Heavy) of 323 tonnes, commissioned on 8 December 1971, having been built in Maryborough, Queensland and named after the location where the RAN's amphibious squadron put 7 Division troops ashore into Borneo in July 1945. HMAS Balikpapan was the prototype LCH and was operated by Army Water Transport until September 1974 when she was transferred to the RAN. HMAS Balikpapan was involved in Operation NAVY HELP DARWIN following Cyclone Tracy's devastation of Darwin on 25 December 1974. |
