History/Origin After HMAS Betano, a LCH (Landing Craft Heavy) of 323 tonnes, commissioned on 8 February 1974 and named after the location where the 2/4 Independent Company landed in Timor on 23 September 1942.

HMAS Betano was involved in Operation NAVY HELP DARWIN following Cyclone Tracy's devastation of Darwin in December 1974.
