History/Origin Ngukurr as an administrative area is based on and takes its name from the Aboriginal community of the same name, established by the Church Mission Society in 1908 on the banks of the Roper River after which it took its name. In 1969 the Roper River Council requested the Aboriginal name for the local area, which exceeds ?living memory? of the local residents be used. Ngukurr has no translatable meaning, but in essence means ?taboo, sacred or holy?.
