History/Origin | The Newcastle Waters locality takes its name from the Town of the same name which in turn was named after the feature named by John McDouall Stuart in May 1861 on his fifth attempt to cross the Australian continent from south to north. Newcastle Waters was the starting point for his successful sixth attempt when Stuart established a base camp at the northern end of Newcastle Waters whilst he found a way through the thick scrub to the north in April 1862. A pastoral station was established adjacent to the waterhole in 1885 and as the waterhole is at the junction of many stock routes, including the Murranji Track, over time a Police Station was constructed together with other facilities to service overlanders. |
