History/Origin | The Mereenie locality is named after the numerous features with this name. Mereenie was first recorded as 'Mareena' by WH Tietkens during his 1889 Central Australian Exploring Expedition for his Camp 14 at Mareena Creek and Mareena Bluff. In 1894, Winneckie as leader of the Horn Exploring Expedition to Central Australia records " 'Mereenie' is derived from the native." Winneckie records "Mereenie Bluff" and names "Mereenie Valley". As Winneckie's Mereenie Bluff appears in the same location as Tietkens' Mareena Bluff, it would appear they are the same feature. Whilst various spellings of Mereenie have been recorded over the years, Winneckie's spelling has been adopted. |
