History/Origin | This suburb is named in commemoration of the "White" Russian farmers who prior to settling in Australia were Cossack Officers during the Russian Revolution. These men having worked on the construction of the Katherine to Birdum Railway, in 1929 and early 1930s took up the Northern Territory Administration's offer of land, in the vicinity of Katherine, on condition that the land be cleared and crops grown. These farms became the basis of Katherine's agricultural industry. The suburb boundary, as approved on 8 March 2007, is deliniated on CP 5078. |
