History/Origin | Jarvis Road is named in commemoration of The Reverend Stanley Jarvis, Minister with the Methodist Church. He was known throughout Australia as a pastor, lecturer and missionary, having spent several years in Fiji. The Methodist Missionary Society chose Jarvis for the Darwin posting because he had experience with Aborigines and he was based at the Wesleyan Church in Knuckey Street. He was in Darwin from 1923 to 1927. Reverend Jarvis always acknowledged his wife saying that she had been responsible for any success he had been able to achieve. She holidayed in Fiji in 1927. Jarvis arrived in Darwin in 1923 and records vary stating that he was here from 4 to 7 years, indicating that perhaps he returned a second time. |
