History/Origin |
Named in commemoration of The Reverend Christopher Goy (1897-1982) who was born in Sydney, New South Wales. Married in 1920, he and his wife Irene had four children, one of whom was born in Darwin. The Reverend Goy joined the Australian Inland Mission (AIM) on 17 December 1936 and spent much of his time visiting people in the Top End and over to the Kimberley region. Goy was always welcomed by the Sisters at the AIM Homes and Hostels. In the NT particularly, he always spoke in their defence if there was ever any criticism. In July 1939 he and Irene drove through Queensland and went to VRD where he formally closed the AIM's Wimmera Home. Later that year he was sent to Darwin where he was appointed an Army chaplain and established the Inter-Church Club. Later he returned to Victoria and in 1963 was awarded an OBE. He died at Ashburton in 1982. |
