History/Origin | Named in commemoration of Arch McGill (1921-1998) who was born in Atherton, Queensland. He joined the RAAF in 1942, when he was aged 21 years. He met Jean, who was born and raised in Laidley, Queensland, during the war years and they were married there in September 1945. They had 5 children. Arch and Jean McGill arrived at Tipperary station to work for Tipperary Pastoral Company, from Queensland in 1966. At that time managing Tipperary station included Elizabeth Down and Litchfield station. They were part of the Tipperary station development that included a feed lot, pig raising and the newly established helicopter mustering, followed by BTEC. On leaving the station around 1976 Arch received an offer from the NT Development Corporation. The job was to travel the Territory, visit all stations and explain to pastoralists all that the BTEC Scheme involved. It was a difficult and emotional job. Arch was also on the Lands Board. Arch McGill was on the Council and President of the Darwin Show Society for more than 10 years. At one time he was President of the Katherine and District Show Society but had to give it up, as running both shows became too much work. McGill Road within the Darwin Show grounds acknowledges Arch's contribution to the Society. Arch McGill was a charming, old style gentleman, greatly respected by all who knew him. The family were pleased that he was alive and still well enough to enjoy his and Jean's Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1995. Arch died in 1998 and had a private cremation. |
