Deane Crescent is named in commemoration of George Price Deane, a cook for the Officers Mess in GW Goyder's NT Survey Expedition to Palmerston in 1869. He was later employed as a teamster. Deane accompanied George McLachlan in an exploration to find traces of John McDouall Stuart's 1862 journey from Katherine, north to Point Stuart. Deane with colleague CF Wells found Stuart's tree at Kekwick Springs. In October 1870, Deane was sent out to Escape Cliffs to pick up stray stock left by Colonel Finniss following his aborted attempt to establish a settlement at Escape Cliffs. He died age 60 at Parakylia, SA in 1904. |
