History/Origin | This Pass was originally named "Temple Bar" during the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line in 1871-72 and gazetted as such in 1959 (NTG 34 of 5 August 1959). Petrick in "History of Alice Springs through Landmarks and Street Names" 1996, writes that the pass became known as such in June 1942 when Robert (Bob) Darken and his bride Victoria (nee Ormond) who were married at the Methodist Church, Alice Springs spent their honeymoon at Temple Bar Gap. Friends who went out to visit the newly weds, said they were going to see the honeymooners or to Honeymoon Gap hence the name. The pass was shown as Temple Bar on maps until 1981 (Alice Springs 1:250,000 SF 53-14 Edition 2) on which the name Honeymoon Gap was shown as the pass name. In 2004, the Place Names Committee agreed the Temple Bar Gap would be officially recorded for the southern pass through which the Roe Creek flows and this pass be known as Honeymoon Gap, as they are known to the general public. |
