History/Origin |
The Hundred of Milne is situated south of the Bynoe Harbour, within the County of Palmerston and is named after Sir William Milne, who came out to South Australia from Glasgow in 1839. His family were wine merchants. Milne took over the business of Patrick Auld but sold the distillery in 1857. He entered the Assembly as MP for Onkaparinga, was Commissioner for Crown lands in the Baker Ministry, later Commissioner for Public Works in the Waterhouse Ministry in 1862 and was elected to the Legislative Council in 1869. In the Hart Ministry in 1870, he carried the Bill in the Council authorising the construction of the Overland Telegraph to Darwin. The Hundred of Milne was one of the first 13 Hundreds gazetted in 1871. |
