The Hundred of Hutchison was named after Commander John Hutchison RN who was a marine surveyor in charge of the South Australian Survey Station between 1852 and 1865, and who rendered service to the Admiralty authorities on coastal charts in South Australia. He joined HMS Herald on the English and Irish coasts in 1850. Commander Hutchison and Lieutenant Howard proceeded to the Northern Territory in April 1864 in the HMS Beatrice, a survey schooner of 90 tons. They were engaged in survey work associated with the SA Survey Party under B T Finniss at Escape Cliffs. In 1866 he handed over the coastal work to Captain Frederick Howard, supporting the John McKinlay expedition. He returned to South Australia due to ill health and died in North Adelaide in 1869. |
