History/Origin | Victoria River Downs Aerodrome was named after the pastoral feature which in turn was named after the Victoria River. The Victoria River was named by Capts Wickham and Stokes on 4 December 1839 during their survey of the north and west coasts of Australia in HMS Beagle after Queen Victoria who had come to the English throne in 1837. Stokes in his journal of the voyage wrote: This is indeed a noble River and worthy of being honoured with the name of her gracious Majesty the Queen which Captain Wickham concurred by bestowing upon it the name of the Victoria River. Wickham and Stokes had earlier named Port Darwin and Bynoe Harbour together with a number of other coastal streams and headlands. The Beagle explored the Victoria River to near where the Victoria Highway crosses the River. |
