| History/Origin | The town of Timber Creek takes its name from the stream of the same name which A C Gregory, of the North Australian Expedition, named on 24 November 1855 when examining the Victoria River and seeking timber to repair his boat Tom Tough. He was later to explore the Victoria River District. A police station (Burmaioni) was established on the banks of the Victoria River in the vicinity of Timber Creek in the mid 1890s and in 1911 Phillip Hutchison established a depot to service the outlying pastoral stations. In post-war years when the Victoria Highway was improved, attempts were made to design a small townsite in the area. A townsite was proclaimed on 20 June 1975 (NTG 24). The Timber Creek Community Government Council has controlled this area of 16 square kilometres since 6 November 1992. |
