History/Origin |
Named in commemoration of John W Lewis, a little known South Australian explorer who accompanied Colonel P E Warburton on his expedition from the Overland Telegraph Line in the Northern Territory to the Oakover River in Western Australia in 1873. The expedition passed some 50 km to the west of the lake while travelling in a northerly direction near Central Mount Wedge. Warburton thought highly of Lewis and admitted that Lewis had several times saved the party from perishing on the journey. After the Warburton expedition was over, Lewis went on to survey the shores and country around Lake Eyer, his work making it possible for the first time to form an idea of the extent of the lake. It is not known what happened to Lewis after that time. |
