| History/Origin | Calvert River was named by Leichhardt on 7 or 8 September 1845 whilst travelling from Queensland to the Port Essington settlement on the Northern Territory coast, after James Calvert of his party. Leichhardt originally thought this river to be the Abel Tasman River (of the early Dutch navigators) and according noted the name on his field notes, but subsequently crossed the name out and named it Calvert River "...in acknowledgment of the good services of Mr Calvert during our expedition..." (Leichhardt Journal P 394) Glen McLaren's 1994 research has revealled that Leichhardt's Calvert River is now known as Sandy Creek. |
