Description

Abstract:

These polygon and raster spatial datasets describe Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems (GDE) in the Western Davenport area, Northern Territory.
The biodiversity study area covers approximately 647 000 ha and is located south of the Tennant Creek Township within the Western Davenport Water Control District.

Satellite imagery and statistical modelling was used to identify areas with a high probability of occurrence of GDEs; specifically, terrestrial vegetation that relies on the availability of shallow groundwater. A proximity analysis was also undertaken using the GDE probability model and a 10 ha neighbourhood window to identify aggregations of GDEs across the landscape. The GDE model is intended to be used as a risk assessment tool and not for definitive assessment of the distribution or abundance of GDEs. It should be considered as a guide only to areas where there is a potentially higher likelihood of GDEs occurring in the broader landscape.

This information is part of the Mapping the Future Project of the Western Davenport Area. This project has identified land capability, water availability and biodiversity values to support land planning and inform development potential. Reports and maps for the project can be viewed from the webpage: depws.nt.gov.au/DevelopmentOpportunities

Details on the GDE Probability Model are also reported in Brim Box et al. 2022.

Data Quality

Lineage:Two spatial datasets have been created for this project.
- GDE_probmap: is a raster with values ranging between zero (very low probability of that pixel containing a GDE) to one (very high probability of that pixel containing a GDE).
- GDE_aggregations: is a polygon dataset derived from a proximity analysis of the GDE probably model.

Positional Accuracy:The GDE probability model used Landsat 8 OLI image data (30 m x 30 m spatial resolution).

Attribute Accuracy:Attribute values are assigned to each polygon and described in the Data Dictionary below.
The attribute naming format uses 10 characters with no spaces to be suitable for an ESRI shape-file format. An alias attribute name is applied to an ESRI file geo-database format.

Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label. Polygons are single part.
