Description
This polygon spatial dataset describes the Risk to Biodiversity in the Western Davenport area, Northern Territory.
The biodiversity study area covers approximately 647,000 ha and is located south of the Tennant Creek Township within the Western Davenport Water Control District.
The data and report provides knowledge of biodiversity values within the study area to;
1. Identify and map the distribution of Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems (GDEs);
2. Characterise the ecological attributes and assess the biological value of GDEs; and
3. Improve knowledge on ecological values and species protected under the EPBC or TPWC Acts.
Risk to Biodiversity classes were derived and mapped across the study area from the biodiversity values data compiled during the study.
This information is part of the Mapping the Future Project of the Western Davenport Area. This project has identified land capability, water availability and biodiversity values to support land planning and inform development potential. Reports and maps for the project can be viewed from the webpage: https://depws.nt.gov.au/DevelopmentOpportunities

Data Quality
Lineage:Two spatial datasets have been created for this project.
- Biodiversity Assessment: contains all attributes as described in the Data Dictionary.
- Biodiversity Risk: contains a reduced set of attributes with components of GDE and SIG_VEG dissolved. This dataset was used to compile the development potential summary datasets for the Mapping the Future project.
The biodiversity values in this Biodiversity Risk spatial dataset were compiled by the Flora and Fauna Division of this department.
- Modelling was developed to map GDEs in the study area and indicated, with high confidence, a band of GDEs running southeast to northwest, where the depth-to-groundwater (DGW) is less than 10 m.
- Floristic surveys were undertaken between March 2019 and August 2019.
- Fauna surveys were undertaken between March and October 2019.
- Vegetation community mapping derived from the soil and land suitability assessments carried out by Burgess et al. (2016) and Carnavas (2022).
Positional Accuracy:The vegetation was mapped at a scale of 1:25,000 Burgess et al. (2016) and 1:100,000 Carnavas (2022).
Attribute Accuracy:Field data (site information) described and classified according to national standards at the time of capture. Attribute values are assigned to each polygon and described in the Data Dictionary below.
The attribute naming format uses 10 characters with no spaces to be suitable for an ESRI shape-file format. An alias attribute name is applied to an ESRI file geo-database format.
Biodiversity values data are compiled into five possible Risk to Biodiversity classes (refer to Data Dictionary in this record).
Three of the classes were identified as appropriate and mapped in this study:
- Class 2. No significant value
- Class 4. Sensitive and/or significant biodiversity
- Class 5. High biodiversity value
Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label. Polygons are single part.

Attribute Attribute Description Possible Code Code Description 01. PROJECT Mapping the Future project name 02. BIORISK Alias: Risk to Biodiversity Class
Integer from 1 to 5
Each Risk to Biodiversity Class is described in 3 parts. They are joined together for mapping display.
Each of the 3 parts is also noted as an attribute - see BIODESC1, 2 and 3.1 (1) NIL (2) Highly modified (3) Land that has had significant alteration by land use, development, mining or infrastructure. 2 (1) LOW (2) No significant biodiversity value (3) No significant values identified. 3 (1) MITIGABLE (2) Apply land management strategies (3) Land that may provide habitat for broadly-occurring threatened species or other biodiversity values. Retention of a proportion of this habitat, for example through application of the NT Land Clearing Guidelines, may be required to protect biodiversity values. 4 (1) MODERATE (2) Sensitive and/or significant biodiversity (3) Land containing sensitive or significant vegetation types as identified in the NT Land Clearing Guidelines, and/or occurrence of species of conservation interest. 5 (1) HIGH (2) High biodiversity value (3) Land with high biodiversity value based on significant vegetation community type, and/or habitat for threatened species. 03. BIODESC1 Alias: BioRisk - Description 1
Part 1 of the Biodiversity Risk Class description, as described in the BIORISK attribute.04. BIODESC2 Alias: BioRisk - Description 2
Part 2 of the Biodiversity Risk Class description, as described in the BIORISK attribute.05. BIODESC3 Alias: BioRisk - Description 3
Part 3 of the Biodiversity Risk Class description, as described in the BIORISK attribute.06. SOBS Site of Botanical Significance (SOBS) name 07. SOCS Site of Conservation Significance (SOCS) name 08. SIG_VEG Sensitive and Significant Vegetation predicted to occur based on mapping as reported in Stokeld et al. 2022.
Note that this attribute does not have values for predicted groundwater dependent ecosystems which are also considered SIG_VEG. GDE's are attributed in the GDE field.09. GDE Groundwater Dependent Ecosystem predicted to occur within polygon based on modelling described in Stokeld et al. 2022 and Brimbox et al. 2022.
GDEs are ecosystems that require access to groundwater to meet all or some of their water requirements on a permanent or intermittent basis (Richardson et al. 2011). Development can impact sensitive habitats beyond the immediate development footprint.10. GDE_AGG Alias: GDE aggregation
Extent of groundwater dependent ecosystems within a 10 hectare neighbourhood window.11. LAND_UNIT Land units with vegetation communities broadly classified as river red gum channels - 10e1, 10s1.
Land units with vegetation communities broadly classified as coolibah low open woodland - 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 10a1, 10a2, 10a3, 10a4, 9s3, 10e2.12. WOFS Water Observations from Space (WOFS; Mueller et al. 2016) used to delineate areas predicted to contain inflow dependent vegetation.
Value = WOFS or null.13. GEOFAB Australian Hydrological Geospatial Fabric v3.2 (Geoscience Australia) used to identify areas predicted to contain inflow dependent vegetation. Specifically, Land Subject To Inundation areas were identified from the HydroAreas dataset.
Value = GEOFAB or null.14. SURFWATER Surface water delineated from a satellite image showing maximum surface water extent across the landscape (Landsat 7 ETM+ image captured on 25 March 2011), with various additional high-res image data used for contextual information.
Value = SURFWATER or null.15. SOURCE Source from which the significant and sensitive vegetation spatial data were derived. 16. AREA_HA Area (hectares) of polygon
