Title: Risk to Biodiversity of the Larrimah Area, 2021
Citation Date:2021-05-31
Date Type:creation
Custodian:Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security
Description
This polygon spatial dataset describes the Risk to Biodiversity in the Larrimah Area, Northern Territory. The biodiversity study area covers approximately 48,600 ha located near the Larrimah Township.
To support future planning and management in Larrimah, the data and report provides a desktop assessment of the current knowledge of biodiversity values within the study area. Biodiversity values data are compiled into five possible Risk to Biodiversity classes and also highlight areas of vegetation significance and the location of Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems.
This information is part of the Mapping the Future Project of the Larrimah Area. This project has identified land capability, water availability and biodiversity values to support land planning and inform development potential over the Wadeye area.
Reports and maps for the Wadeye project can be viewed from the webpage: https://depws.nt.gov.au/DevelopmentOpportunities

Data Quality
Lineage:The biodiversity values in this Risk to Biodiversity spatial dataset were compiled by the Flora and Fauna Division of this department using current vegetation community mapping at a scale of 1:25,000 derived from the soil and land suitability assessments carried out by Burgess et al. (2015) and McGrath et al. (2019).
Potential areas of conservation significance and other biodiversity values were derived from the distribution of vegetation communities across the two surveys. (refer to Supplementary Information in this metadata record).
Positional Accuracy:The vegetation was mapped at a scale of 1:25,000.
Attribute Accuracy:Field data (site information) described and classified according to national standards at the time of capture. Attribute values are assigned to each polygon and described in the Data Dictionary below.
The attribute naming format uses 10 characters with no spaces to be suitable for an ESRI shape-file format. An alias attribute name is applied to an ESRI file geo-database format.
Biodiversity values data are compiled into five possible Risk to Biodiversity classes (refer to Data Dictionary in this record).
Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.
Completeness:Complete

Attribute Attribute Description Possible Code Code Description 01. PROJECT Project Name 02. BIORISK Alias: Risk to Biodiversity Class
Integer from 1 to 5
Each Risk to Biodiversity Class is described in 3 parts. They are joined together for mapping display.
Each of the 3 parts is also noted as an attribute - see BIODESC1, 2 and 3.1 (1) NIL (2) Highly modified (3) Land that has had significant alteration by land use, development, mining or infrastructure. 2 (1) LOW (2) No significant biodiversity value (3) No significant values identified. 3 (1) MITIGABLE (2) Apply land management strategies (3) Land that may provide habitat for broadly-occurring threatened species or other biodiversity values. Retention of a proportion of this habitat, for example through application of the NT Land Clearing Guidelines, may be required to protect biodiversity values. 4 (1) MODERATE (2) Sensitive and/or significant biodiversity (3) Land containing sensitive or significant vegetation types as identified in the NT Land Clearing Guidelines, and/or occurrence of species of conservation interest. 5 (1) HIGH (2) High biodiversity value (3) Land with high biodiversity value based on significant vegetation community type, and/or habitat for threatened species. 03. BIODESC1 Alias: BioRisk - Description 1
Part 1 of the Biodiversity Risk Class description, as described in the BIORISK attribute.04. BIODESC2 Alias: BioRisk - Description 2
Part 2 of the Biodiversity Risk Class description, as described in the BIORISK attribute.05. BIODESC3 Alias: BioRisk - Description 3
Part 3 of the Biodiversity Risk Class description, as described in the BIORISK attribute.06. SIGVEG Sensitive/Significant vegetation
Vegetation considered sensitive or significant within the NT Planning Scheme and NT Land Clearing Guidelines.07. GDE Groundwater Dependent Ecosystem is present within the map unit.
Values: Yes, No or Unsure.
GDEs are ecosystems that require access to groundwater to meet all or some of their water requirements on a permanent or intermittent basis (Richardson et al. 2011). Development can impact sensitive habitats beyond the immediate development footprint.08. GDE_NAT GDE nature
The nature/extent of the communities groundwater dependence. Polygons are classified as either Permanent or Seasonal.09. GDE_TYPE GDE type
Groundwater dependent ecosystem type, according to the criteria outlined in the Australian groundwater-dependent ecosystems toolbox (Richardson et al. 2011).Type 2 Groundwater dependent ecosystem classified as Type 2 surface expression. Type 3 Groundwater dependent ecosystem classified as Type 3 subsurface presence 10. GDE_CONF GDE Confidence
classified as either High or Moderate.11. LAND_UNIT Land Unit label
Data source is Land Resources Larrimah surveys (Burgess et al 2017 and McGrath et al 2019)
The land units are present in both surveys, however the descriptions are slightly different.
Vegetation descriptions are stored in the land resource datasets. Use the attribute LAND_UNIT as a join. Each survey should be joined separately. Refer to Supplementary Information in this metadata record.12. LU_SURVID Land unit survey ID
Department code to identify the survey is usually based on the soil site sheets.LAR18_25 Soil and Land Suitability Assessment for Irrigated Agriculture on NT Portion 4478 and 4663 in the Larrimah Township area, Sturt Plateau, 2019 LARRI_25 Soil and Land Suitability Assessment for Irrigated Agriculture in the Larrimah Area, Sturt Plateau, 2015 13. LU_SURVEY Land unit survey name
