Description

Abstract:

This polygon spatial dataset provides broad scale reconnaissance land system boundaries for Henbury Station, Northern Territory, and describes dominant soils and landscapes. The survey aimed to refine existing Henbury Land System mapping (Bastian 1983) and improve soil property descriptions. The survey area of 5,300 km2 is located approximately 120 km south-west of Alice Springs via the Stuart Highway.

79 field sites were described during July - September 2020, including 17 with laboratory analysis. The spatial data has a mapping scale of 1:250,000.

Data Quality

Lineage:- Map unit boundaries delineated from digital satellite imagery (WorldView-2) and digital elevation model (SRTM-derived 1 second Smoothed DEM). Preliminary linework was captured on field map sheets. Field map sheets incorporated digital satellite imagery and DEM layers. Field map sheets with final linework were scanned and rectified. Linework digitised on screen directly from field map sheets.
- Map unit boundaries derived using digital satellite imagery, DEM, geological and topographic data. Field data (site information) described and classified according to national standards at the time of capture.
- Map unit polygons collected via geographic information system (ESRI ArcGIS). Attributes attached to map units with additional attributes unique to individual surveys.

Positional Accuracy:POLYGON DATA: Map unit boundaries digitised on screen directly from digital rectified field maps. Level of accuracy depends on the number of control points on individual map sheets. Control points exclusively used Map Grid of Australia (MGA) grid lines. Depending on the nature of the landscape (the number of control points), positional accuracy may vary. Positional accuracy generally considered high to very high.

POINT DATA: Site point coordinates derived from a geographic positioning system with general accuracy of within 10-50m.

Attribute Accuracy:The attribute information conforms to the 'Australian Soil and Land Survey Field Handbook' at time of capture.
Attributes assigned according to the dominant feature. For example, where ten sites have been grouped to describe a particular map unit and two different soils described from these sites then the dominant soil is chosen. The department has assigned a list of core attribute values, described in the Data Dictionary below, to each polygon.

The attribute naming format uses 10 characters with no spaces to be suitable for an ESRI shape-file format. An alias attribute name is applied to an ESRI file geo-database format.

Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.

Completeness:Spatial data is complete

Data Dictionary

AttributeAttribute DescriptionPossible CodeCode Description
01. SurveyNameAlias: Survey Name
The name of the survey area or report to which the mapping refers
02. SuveyIDAlias: Survey Identifier
A department code that usually refers to the first five characters from the original survey site sheet.
03. LandSystemAlias: Land System
The name given to the Land System for the spatial dataset.
The concept of a land system was defined by Christian and Stewart (1953), as "an area or group of areas, throughout which there is a recurring pattern of topography (landforms), soils and vegetation". A change in this pattern determines the boundary of a land system.
04. MapUnitAlias: Map Unit
An abbreviation of the land system and used as a polygon label for data display purposes.
(ie An for Land System Angus)
05. MapClassAlias: Map Class
A grouping of Map Units to broadly describe a landform pattern.
06. LSDescAlias: Land System description
07. LFormDescAlias: Landform Description
Landform description includes details about landform, and general notes pertaining to slope, surface gravel and other details describing the range land system.
08. SoilDescAlias: Soil Description
Soil description includes an ASC or Northcote/other soil classification and usually includes colour, soil depth and other notes describing the soil.
09. VegDescAlias: Vegetation Description
The dominant species and its structure are recorded. Occasionally it will include minor vegetation communities also noted in the land unit description and/or notes specific to the community.
10. GeologyAlias: Geology
11. SoilAlias: Dominant Soil Order
12. SoilDepthAlias: Soil Depth
13. SlopeAlias: Slope Range %
14. DrainageAlias: Soil Drainage
15. RunoffAlias: Surface Run-off
16. PermeableAlias: Permeability
17. Area_km2Alias: Area (km2)
Each polygon area has been measured in km2 using Albers projection.
