Description

Abstract:

The Top End Waterways Project assessed and described the physical and ecological condition of the major rivers and their tributaries within the Katherine Region and included the Daly River, Roper River and Victoria River catchments. The project was part funded by the National Landcare Program and managed by the Dept Lands, Planning and Environment (DLPE) from 1995 to 2005.

The spatial data collated for the Victoria River Catchment report includes sub-catchment boundaries digitised using 1:100,000 (where available) and 1:250000 topographic map sheets, aerial photography and landsat imagery. The Roper River catchment was divided into 12 major sub-catchments and was further divided into 15 sub-sections. A total of 80 sites were surveyed to provide base-line descriptions and condition reports for channel type diversity, bank stability, bed stability, cover and structural diversity of riparian vegetation, width of riparian vegetation, cover of exotic vegetation and many other aspects of each site and sub-section within the Victoria River Catchment.

Data Quality

Lineage:The Victoria River catchment and sub-section boundaries were delineated onto 1:100,000 and 1:250,000 topographic map sheets taking into account contour lines and spot heights before being digitised. The Victoria River Catchment boundary looks considerably different to the Australian Water Resources Council (AWRC) basin boundary particularly over the south east of the catchment. This area was defined using 1:250,000 topographic map sheets and probably requires further ground truthing. However, please note that the AWRC boundaries were also defined using 1:250,000 mapping.

Positional Accuracy:Surveyed site locations originally captured using hand-held GPS receiver in UTM coordinate system, datum AGD1966 with an accuracy of +/- 15 metres.

Attribute Accuracy:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon data topology rules applied are must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.

Logical Consistency:Dataset topological consistency has been checked and all classified polygons are closed, nodes are formed at the intersection of lines and there is only one label within each polygon.
